Constraining GRB progenitor models by probing Wolf-Rayet wind geometries in the Large Magellanic Cloud

چکیده

Context. The favoured progenitors of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are rapidly rotating Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. However, most Galactic WR stars are slow rotators, as stellar winds are thought to remove angular momentum. This poses a serious challenge to the collapsar model. Recent observations indicate that GRBs occur predominately in low metallicity (Z) environments, which may resolve the problem: lower Z leads to less mass loss, which may inhibit angular momentum removal, allowing WR stars to remain rotating rapidly until collapse. Aims. We wish to determine whether low Z WR stars rotate on average more rapidly than Galactic WR stars. Methods. We perform a Very Large Telescope (VLT) linear spectropolarimetry survey of WR stars in the low Z environment of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and compare our results with the Galactic sample of Harries et al. (1998). Results. We find that only 2 out of 13 (i.e. 15%) of LMC WR stars show line polarization effects, compared to a similarly low fraction of ∼ 15-20% for Galactic WR stars. Conclusions. The low incidence of line polarization effects in LMC WR stars suggests that the threshold metallicity where significant differences in WR rotational properties occur is below that of the LMC (Z ∼ 0.5 Z⊙), possibly constraining GRB progenitor channels to this upper metallicity.

The circumstellar environment of Wolf - Rayet stars & Gamma - ray burst afterglows

We study the evolution of the circumstellar medium of massive stars. We pay particular attention to Wolf-Rayet stars that are thought to be the progenitors of some long Gamma-Ray Bursts. We detail the mass-loss rates we use in our stellar evolution models and how we estimate the stellar wind speeds during different phases. With these details we simulate the interactions between the wind and the...

Probing the circumstellar medium of GRB afterglows through absorption-line observations.

A systematic search of Wolf-Rayet wind signatures, as represented by blue-shifted, high-velocity (|Deltav|=1000-5000 kms(-1)) C IV lambdalambda 1548, 1550 absorption doublet has yielded an estimate of 20% for the incidence of these C IV absorbers near the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This is consistent with what is observed near classical damped Lyalpha absorbers that have a compar...

On the Absence of Wolf-rayet Signatures in Grb Afterglow Spectra: Constraints on the Grb Progenitor Environment

We present a detailed study of the circumstellar medium (CSM) around the progenitor stars of longduration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) at redshift z > 1.5. We establish a statistical sample of five GRB spectra for which the data were collected and analyzed with no prior knowledge of the line-of-sight properties, and carry out a systematic search of Wolf-Rayet wind signatures, as represented by blue-shif...

Spectroscopy of the γ-ray burst GRB 021004: a structured jet ploughing through a massive stellar wind

We present spectra of the afterglow of the γ -ray burst GRB 021004 taken with the ISIS spectrograph on the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) and with the Focal Reducer/Low Dispersion Spectrograph 1 (FORS1) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at three epochs spanning 0.49–6.62 d after the burst. We observe strong absorption probably coming from the host galaxy, alongside absorption in H I, Si IV an...

Wind Interaction Models for Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows: the Case for Two Types of Progenitors

Beginning with the γ-ray bursts GRB 970228 and GRB 970508, a standard model for the interpretation of GRB afterglows emerged involving synchrotron emission from a constant energy blast wave expanding into a constant density, “interstellar” medium. However, a massive star origin for GRBs implies a stellar wind environment, probably a Wolf-Rayet star, and we have previously suggested wind interac...
